It's a wet and wet December. But due to climate change for the past few years, this month has now turned into a dull December because according to the Meteorological Department, there is no significant chance of rains even in the last week of December this year.

This fog not only makes traveling on the motorways and national highways difficult, but the dense fog in the morning and evening hours affects the flow of traffic in cities.

In this situation, where the movement of vehicles is affected, the flight of ships is also disrupted and sometimes the wheel of the train also stops.

Pakistan Meteorological Department expert Dr. Muhammad Hanif warned about the weather and fog situation and advised to avoid traveling on national highways and motorways in the morning and night hours.

Muhammad Hanif tweeted that Punjab is under heavy fog and cold and most areas of Punjab will remain under heavy fog so citizens should avoid unnecessary travel on weekends and in fog.

He further wrote that travel on motorways and highways between one and five o'clock in the day. Heavy fog will last for 16 to 20 hours in the next few days.

But beauty and romance are in their place, but in these days of winter in the country, when most of the areas of the country are covered by thick fog, we often get to see videos of accidents due to thick fog on social media and traditional media. Is there someone sharing an incident on WhatsApp about how much difficulty he faced in traveling due to fog? In such a case, what precautions should be taken while traveling.

Precautions while traveling in fog

Traveling in fog can be dangerous and unnecessary travel during fog should be avoided. During fog, Pakistan National Highways and Motorways Authority issues warning messages, awareness campaigns and precautionary measures during travel for the safety of the public.

According to the precautionary measures issued by Pakistan Highways and Motorways:

Avoid unnecessary travel in fog to avoid any untoward accident.

Before starting your journey, call the National Highways and Motorways Authority helpline 130 to get information about the fog situation.

Avoid traveling at night in fog If it is absolutely necessary to travel, keep the car's headlights on low beam because the light from high beam reflects in the fog, which affects visibility severely.

Be sure to use fog lights and both signals whether it's day or night

Keep the car heater off and windows open while traveling in fog

Keep your vehicle's tail lights on and turn signals on so that traffic ahead and behind you are aware of your presence on the road

While traveling in fog, keep the vehicle speed lower than normal and keep a greater distance from the next vehicle than in normal conditions so that you can control the vehicle in case of emergency

In case of a difficult situation while traveling on the motorways and national highways, one can call the helpline of the Motorway Police on 130 for help.

Try using reflectors on the front and rear bumpers of your vehicle when traveling in fog.

Avoid frequent lane changes while traveling in fog and try to keep traveling in the same lane at a slow speed.

If you are stuck traveling in fog due to reduced visibility or any other reason, try to look for the yellow line on the left side of the road.

The best thing to do when visibility is zero is to stop the journey temporarily, try to stop the vehicle at a toll plaza, petrol pump or rest area. If there is no such lighted area nearby, park the vehicle on the left side of the road as far away from the road as possible.

In this case, turn off the headlights of the vehicle and leave only the indicators on so that the traffic coming from behind is aware of you. If you keep your headlights and rear lights on in heavy fog, the traffic coming from behind may mistake your vehicle's position for the road due to the fog and there may be a risk of an accident.

Similarly, when traveling in fog, keep the air pressure in your tires one pascal lower than normal to keep your car's tires gripped by slippery roads.
