The journey of life is long and challenging. Each moment is precious, but we often waste it in ignorance, only to look back with regret. We wish to return to the past, but that is impossible. On the other hand, there are harsh realities of life that we try to escape from, painful memories that still sting, no matter how much time has passed. With time, we are thankful for the passing of those painful moments, though they still haunt us like a bad dream.
Life’s journey begins in a mother’s womb, and before we know it, we transition from childhood to youth. Time flies as we fulfill daily responsibilities, and by then, we have gained a lot of experience. We learn many things, experience success and failure, stumble, fall, and rise again. We face the sorrow of losing loved ones and the joy of finding new relationships.
This cycle of falling and rising, of happiness and sorrow, is part of life’s journey. It either leaves us exhausted or brings us peace. At times, we long for an end to our struggles, while at other times, we cry and pray for life. We regret wasted time but also feel joy when we use it wisely. These experiences add color to life, some vibrant, some dull.
Eventually, we grow old and leave this world, but the journey of life doesn’t truly end—it merely pauses. Some call it death, but for those who understand the truth, it is the beginning of a new journey: meeting the Creator. That’s why Sufis refer to death as a wedding, a moment of ultimate joy when they meet their Beloved, Allah.
In this world, we must live in a way that, when death comes, we feel a sense of fulfillment in our love for the Divine. How do we do this? By loving and caring for others, for the sake of Allah. All we do in life should be for Him alone, for He is the one who gives us everything.
Just as we cannot digest food without His will, our entire existence depends on Him. He is the source of our life, strength, and sustenance. Everything in the universe belongs to Him, so why shouldn’t we belong to Him too? Those who understand this realize that death is not an end but a beautiful moment of reunion with their Beloved. This is where true life begins, the journey from the temporary to the eternal.
